Mrs Richardson leads the teaching of PSHE and RSE in School.
Our Intent for PSHE and RSE
At Carr Hill we aim to encourage children to communicate their feelings, empathise with others and build positive relationships with children and adults. They are supported to manage strong emotions, understand about personal safety and make good choices. This is intended to help them to access all areas of the curriculum and grow to be happy, resilient and safe teens and adults. This is started with a strong focus In EYFS on PSED and Health and Self Care and supported through quality, focused PSHE lessons in the rest of the school. However, it is also embedded in our whole school ethos, culture, daily life and interactions between staff and children. The PSHE (personal, social, health and economic) education has three strands — health & wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world. The first two areas are Statutory in the NC RSE and Health Education and the third in the wider non statutory PSHE guidelines. It is important to us that the children are able to explore their emotions, reactions and real-life scenarios in a safe respectful environment through a range of different media: drama, music, discussion, writing, drawing, games, literature, songs.
Our Implementation for PSHE and RSE
We provide a robust curriculum which covers all aspects of PSHE (including statutory RSE and Health Education) and British Values and Citizenship. When delivering PSHE and RSE here at Carr Hill there is a focus on being responsive to world, local, community, school and class events and discussing these as they arise and sharing these ideas and opportunities with our colleagues. Teachers are creative and experienced in adapting plans to meet the needs and interests of their class (including supporting SEN and EAL to access the curriculum) and using literature, film, music or any of the arts or sports as well as peer and group discussion. Distancing techniques may also be used to discuss sensitive issues. It is important that PSHE lessons are memorable and relevant. Since PSHE lessons are often a doorway to disclosures children need to be aware that staff can’t keep secrets but also that they may not want to share everything with the whole class, but that staff are still available to listen. Children should be given the opportunity to participate in meaningful discussion and debate in a safe environment that respects and values their opinions, experiences and feelings. The lessons should begin with setting the scene (peer massage/ mindfulness chime/ visual focus), follow clear aims and objectives but may follow a different trajectory if this is relevant. Additionally, they are supported with enrichment opportunities including outdoor activities, community events, trailblazers, designated week activities like mental health week, bullying week to name a few.
The Impact of PSHE and RSE
- Discussion with the children should show their emotional literacy.
- There is evidence of a supportive peer framework.
- There is empathy and understanding of people’s lives different to their own.
- Children know how to be safe and who their safe adults are.
- PSHE lessons shared at home to open a dialogue with parents.
Our Vision
Here at Carr Hill, all of our children benefit from a rich and diverse curriculum that has spiritual, moral, social and cultural learning at its core. We believe it is imperative that the skills our children develop whilst in school help them to prepare for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of everyday life in the wider world. Each child is encouraged to reach their full potential, with achievements and successes being celebrated and rewarded.
Our Personal, Social and Health Education is embedded in all areas of our curriculum. Additionally, there is a focus on Health and Well being, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. Our vision is to give children the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to become fully-rounded citizens in our community who are healthy, confident, sociable and emotionally literate. We aim to prepare children for life in Modern Britain today.
School Curriculum
To fulfil all of the aspects within this subject we follow a Primary Programme which we have ensured is relevant to our pupils at a social, contextual and environmental level. Staff have scheduled the programme across the school to fit in to contextual needs of the school but to ensure that teaching and learning develops systematically year-on-year.
