Mrs Chandler leads Oracy across school
Our Intent for Oracy
Our Oracy Vision: ‘For our school to be a place where pupils, staff and parents speak with kindness, confidence and clarity. A place where everybody believes they have a voice, feels valued and listened to, and is supported in developing the skills to communicate effectively.’
‘Learning to speak and speaking to learn’ is central to our culture at Carr Hill. We passionately believe that the 4 key strands of Oracy (Linguistic, Social and Emotional, Cognitive and Physical) underpin success in academic and social aspects of school life and beyond.
We are going to become a Voice21 school this year and will begin to teach and develop all of these strands across the whole curriculum, including the use of restorative practice to strengthen social skills and relationships and deal with conflict.

The Implementation of Oracy
‘Exploratory Talk’ and ‘Presentational Talk’ is embedded practice across the school; it is specifically planned for within lessons. As part of the Voice 21 programme and school Oracy progression plans
Talk Guidelines (speaking and listening) are used in every class and based on the progression guidelines developed for our school, in line with our wider curriculum. The class guidelines are updated regularly to reflect oracy development.

Talk Tactics will also be taught progressively to develop children’s understanding of key purposes of talk: Instigate / Challenge / Build / Clarify / Summarise / Probe. Teachers plan for oracy and use vocabulary and sentence stems as key scaffolds to support progress.
The Impact of Oracy
The impact of oracy will be measured through lesson observation (planned teaching of oracy / opportunity for exploratory talk / presentational talk), daily interactions with our pupils and progression of our ‘Oracy Progression Steps’ across the school year.

Talk Through Stories

As part of our vision to develop oracy skills across school, we use the ‘Talk Through Stories’ scheme to support children’s talk development in Reception and Key Stage One .
Talk Through Stories is designed for all children, but especially those who do not come from ‘read a lot’ families.
The programme helps children love stories, bringing them to life through talk. It specifically and systematically builds their vocabulary and comprehension so they understand – and love – the books that they will go on to read for themselves.
